Hi all,
after 6 months of developing, Geany 0.15 is available!
For a comprehensive list of changes to Geany 0.15, please see http://www.geany.org/Documentation/ReleaseNotes. A very detailed and complete list of changes can be found in the ChangeLog, included in the source packages as well as in the Windows binary files.
Some of the highlights:
- Add 'Close Other Documents' File menu command - Add support for custom file templates in ~/.geany/templates/files - Implement soft tabs support - Update Scintilla to version 1.77 - New filetypes: OpenGL Shader Language (GLSL), R, gettext files (.po) - Add Split Window plugin - Merge InstantSave, AutoSave and BackupCopy plugins into the new plugin 'Save Actions' - Many changes to the plugin API; see the API documentation and the geany-devel list archives - and of course many bug fixes and improvements - New translations: Korean and Turkish, many updated translations
There are many more cool new things, you should read the Release Notes.
Notes for Windows users: - From now on there are only two installers available: one with a GTK runtime environment included (recommended) and one without. Both are built against GTK 2.12, so this is hard requirement for the Windows binaries. - Plugins are now installed in the lib/ subdirectory, localisation files are installed in the share/ subdirectory and the Geany binary as well as the libs of the GTK runtime environment are installed in the bin/ subdirectory. So maybe a full uninstall and install cycle on Windows is useful, your configuration will remain.
We want to thank all translators who have contributed new or updated translations to this release as well as all people who contributed to this release with patches, feedback, bug reports and so on. Thank you!
All downloads can be found as usual on http://download.geany.org or https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=153444
Happy coding, Enrico
Yay! Great! Now I just have to wait, until it appears in the portage and I am testing it right away :)

Thanks very much to everyone involved in making this happen!
I assume it'll take a while until this updates makes it into the Ubuntu repositories, so I'm probably gonna install from source.

While waiting you could check www.getdeb.net maybe there'll arrive an updated version earlier.
I guess Geany 0.15 will first available with the next+1 release of Ubuntu, I guess Ubuntu 9/04.
But as an user you could beg the Ubuntu Geany package maintainer to create a backport. But this is out of our scope of actions, so you (or any other Ubuntu user) should do it.

Great, but as I compile geany from svn, it doesn't really affect me _that_ much....
On a side note: Isn't it a bit of a blatant understatement to have a release number 0.15, as geany is one of the most feature complete, stable and feature rich editor around?
I mean, nedit is version 5, so geany would at least have to be version 22.15....
Otherwise: Thanks again for this great piece of software. Tim

Heh, same here :).

Hmm, the great plan for Geany 1.0 is to eliminate many of the existing items in the TODO file as well as having a stable plugin API. But we are going in the right way, achieved already some good progress with 0.15.
Regards, Enrico
Congrats on the new release!
I have compiled Geany 0.15 [from source] successfully on both Mac OS X and Ubuntu Hardy 64.
The only thing that I have noticed is that on Ubuntu (maybe on the Mac as well, I need to double check), Geany 0.15 says "No plugins available" within the plugin manager. This was not the case for Geany 0.14.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Could you check Help->Debug Messages for any relevant output after opening and closing the Plugin Manager dialog? I guess there a some messages like:
Plugin blah" is not binary compatible with this release of Geany - recompile it.
If so, do what the message tells: make sure all plugins are compiled against the sources of Geany 0.15 and make sure they are properly installed.

Hi,
I checked the debug messages like you suggested, but there are no relevant entries.
I am not trying to load any plugins that don't come with Geany by default. I see all the plugins that get built when building Geany in the lib/geany directory (for example: filebrowser.la, filebrowser,so, etc). However they aren't loaded when I start Geany.
This DID work on my Mac. The only thing I did differently is that on the Mac, I did "sudo make install". In Ubuntu I did "sudo make install --prefix=~/applications/geany/0.15". I suspect that the Geany plugin manager is looking only in "/usr/local/lib/geany" for plugins. Is there a way to change the location that the plugin manager looks for plugins?
Thanks!

Yes, when setting the prefix correctly. I doubt 'make install --prefix=...' is intended to work and I doubt any application handles this correctly. And checking the manpage of GNU make tells nothing about any '--prefix option'.
Please do it this way: make clean ./configure --prefix=/home/user/applications/geany/0.15 make sudo make install
Then Geany knows about your non-standard prefix and things will work fine (e.g. I'm using /home/enrico/apps/ and it works). And you can't or at least should not use '~' in the prefix path, IIRC the configure script tells you so, too. You should use absolute path names.
Regards, Enrico
Thank you.
Your suggestions were right on target... everything seems to work now.
There is one other thing that I am noticing with the new release. It seems that "column mode" or "block edit mode" is no longer supported? I could have done something wrong, but in Geany 0.14, I was able to do this by holding down CTRL while selecting text and then edit. Is this functionality still supported in Geany 0.15?
Thanks!
