What does the filetype in the status bar at the bottom say?
Note the filetype is per document, not a single setting for all docs.
You can make files open as none by setting the option in the open dialog.

I'm afraid you will have to open them with filetype set to none or set it for each manually, Geany is designed to try very hard to get a filetype since so much depends on that.
You could try editing the filetype.sh file [styling] section (Tools->Configuration files->Filetype configuration->scripting languages->filetypes.sh) to map all syntactic elements to default style. Those lines are element=style so all should be =default. Never tried it myself.

thanks so much.
By setting all synaptic elements = default, all syntax highlighting was removed. :-)

Even if I'm a bit late and you probably already solved this, I'd suggest to try an alternate way which should work if I remember it correctly:
1. cp /usr/share/geany/filetype_extensions.conf to ~/.config/geany/ 2. Start Geany 3. Go to Menu -> Configuration Files -> filetype_extentions.conf 4. Delete everything but the line starting with Sh (line 63 here, this may vary) 5. Remove .sh extension from the remaining line
That way there shouldn't be anything automatically happening with .sh files at all and you've just overridden that setting for Shell files.

Thanks.
Instead of deleting the rest, I just commented them out. Just in case. :-)

Shell files are almost certainly detected by the shebang not the extension. The only way of disabling this is to open files manually set to filetype none as I said above.

There were other changes I made, but don't recall them all.
But, there is no syntax highlighting for any .sh and text files that Geany opens.
Config files have a little syntax highlighting, but it's rare that I edit those.
Thanks for all the help I got from everyone. Andrew Kennedy
