There were other changes I made, but don't recall them all.

But, there is no syntax highlighting for any .sh and text files that Geany opens.

Config files have a little syntax highlighting, but it's rare that I edit those.

Shell files are almost certainly detected by the shebang not the
extension.  The only way of disabling this is to open files manually
set to filetype none as I said above.
