For some reason, Geany often (though not always!?) displays a blank line (as indicated by line numbers) at the end of files even if there really isn't one. This can be quite irritating, as some scenarios require a (possibly even exactly one) trailing blank line. Is this a bug?

I haven't noticed this myself, perhaps. Can you provide steps to reproduce it? What version of Geany are you using?

I'm afraid it seems a bit random (Geany v0.15 / r3012 on Ubuntu 8.04 - same with v0.14 before though). So if nobody else has noticed this issue, don't worry about it for now - I'll report back here as soon as I can make out a reproducible pattern.

I now believe this has to do with the "Strip trailing spaces and tabs" setting (Preferences > Files > Saving files); while the editor still displays the blank line, it is being stripped when the file is saved. That doesn't explain the perceived (imagined?) randomness though...

It's unlikely that the last line is stripped off completely. I think you should check the 'Ensure new line at file end' preference, it sounds like it's activated while you want to disable it :).
