Did you use any package or compile geany on your own?
I compiled geany on my own.
If yes, please have a look into your installation directory, if there is a file geany.mo.
No, sorry, that file does not exist.
If you didn't use any prefix you should find them at /usr/local/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES
The subdirectory locale is not available in /usr/local/share. Could that be the problem?
Version of gtk: gtk+2.0-2.10.3-4mdv2007.0 The message of locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_NUMERIC=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_TIME=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_MONETARY=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_PAPER=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_NAME=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_ADDRESS=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_TELEPHONE=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_MEASUREMENT=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_IDENTIFICATION=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_ALL=
Looks good. The locales are set correctly so I think we are looking for a bug.
Can you please send the output geany gives, when you start it from console?
There is really no output to console from geany.
I didn't mention yet that a few items in the menus and in the toolbars are in German, like "Neu" or "Speichern" instead of "New" or "Save". As I looked into geany.glade in the installation directory, I found out that only the gtk-strings come in German, yet not all the other ones.

Probably yes. How did you run the configure script and what was the output. Were there any error messages at the end of the configure script? There should be some output like the following at the end of the script before it generates the Makefiles: checking locale.h usability... yes checking locale.h presence... yes checking for locale.h... yes checking for LC_MESSAGES... yes checking for libintl.h... (cached) yes checking for ngettext in libc... yes checking for dgettext in libc... yes checking for bind_textdomain_codeset... yes checking for msgfmt... /usr/bin/msgfmt checking for dcgettext... yes checking for gmsgfmt... /usr/bin/msgfmt checking for xgettext... /usr/bin/xgettext checking for catalogs to be installed... be ca cs de es fi fr hu it nl pl pt_BR ru vi zh_CN zh_TW c

Frank didn't mention that you have to run geany with the argument -d to get some output(see geany --help for more information).

That's good. This means that your GTK installation itself runs with the German locale. These buttons like Save and New are standard GTK buttons therefore they get translated by GTK.

I run the configure script by typing ./configure in the extracted source directory in console. Here is the end of my configure script:

Configuration is done OK.
It seems like the problem is "checking for msgfmt... no", doesn't it? However, I fear I will never have luck with this problem because the force is not with me as the configure script tells us ...

Here is the output when opening a file: [nut@localhost geany-0.10.2]$ geany -d ** INFO: GTK+ 2.10.3, GLib 2.12.3 ** INFO: /home/nut/patch.txt : None (UTF-8) ** INFO: Quitting...

I guess. On Debian, msgfmt is in the gettext package. I'm not sure in which package msgfmt can be found on Mandriva. Just make sure that it is installed and can be found by configure.

Probably ;-). No, it's just a joke and doesn't affect anything.
