how to activate block selection mode
Hello I need a feature that is called "Rectangular block selection" I use since a long time geany as my favourite texteditor. Where can I select this feature? In many comparisons of text editors is geany listed with this feature. I can't find the place where I have to activate ths. I was reading the FAQ and the documentation, nothing found.... At this time I have geany 0.16 installed Greetings Randolf Balasus
Hi,
Place your cursor at corner of the area to select, click, move cursor to diagonally oposite corner and ctrl-shift-click
Cheers Lex

wow, this works very well!!!! thanx for the answer
Why is there nothing to found in the documentation? Is this a very commen procedure for many editors?

Cheers Lex

Without looking myself, I suggest to refer "block selection" to that page. AFAIK many editors call it that way.
In Context this is a "selection mode" available with strg+l, this has the advantage, that you can use cursors and "see" what you are selecting. It can help for checking indentation of big methods (though you do not want such methods anyway... ;-))
Mmmh, I do not use the future very often, but then it is handy. :-)

Probably best to refer to it as both, eg
...rectangular selection (also known as block selection in other editors)...
I'll put it on the todo list for some work I'm doing on the manual.

But sometimes such methods are needed ;-) but then Geany's indenting makes it pretty easy to get right.
Cheers Lex

Hmm, the manual has a section called "Column mode editing (rectangular selections)" [1]
It contains "column", "rectangular" and "selection".

Again, Enrico manages to hint at his opinion without saying anything that could be considered negative. ;) I appreciate this, but I personally am going to go a little further and say that I think it's kind of sad that Geany would add clutter to its documentation because other editors made a bad choice of terminology.
Since "block" can (and should!) mean other things to programmers, I much prefer to the terms "column mode" and "rectangular selection". These are much clearer and more direct. It's harder to misinterpret them. And actually all the editors *I* have used call it one of those two. (Granted, there are many editors I have not used.)
If Lex wants to be nice and add it, then I guess it's really no skin off my back. But I still think it's a little sad.

Just a question--is the target audience of Geany programmers only?
Not at all. I think John didn't mean "programmers" that literally, at least I interpreted it wider as "users of editors".

I didn't know that Geany can do this and must say: wow :) It's really awesome feature.
Thanks for it Best regards Daniel
Hi John,
I agree with you that a block is the bit of code between curly brackets, at least in C et al.
Thats why I just suggested adding the bit in parentheses in one place so it would be caught by a search done by any refugee from another editor who is seeking asylum with Geany :-) but doesn't change the Geany name of the feature.
Cheers Lex

Yes, we must compliment him on always being a perfect gentleman. It makes contributing to Geany always a pleasant experience.
