I think the "File saved" status bar message should be eliminated.
When a file with outstanding changes gets saved, the tab text changes from red to black, and the asterisk in the title bar disappears. That should be plenty enough indication that the file got saved.
The reason this bothers me is when I try to compile a file, and I get a compiler message that says "error on line 115" the first thing I want to know is, how close is that line to the line I just edited?
But when I look down at the status bar, instead of seeing the current line number like I expect, I see a message saying the file got saved.
So would you consider getting rid of this status bar message?
( If so, it's in the file "document.c" somewhere around line 1104 )
Thanks, - Jeff

Personally, I think it would be more confusing to not get the status message because you got one for creating, opening and reloading files but not for saving? Something inconsistent.
Maybe just unchecking the option "Switch to status message list at new message" in the preferences dialog will help you.

Then get rid of them all. :-)
Or at least put them somewhere else, but don't clobber the Line/Column number indicator with messages that should be obvious anyway.
Maybe just unchecking the option "Switch to status message list at new message" in the preferences dialog will help you.
No, that doesn't help. I am talking about the status bar at the bottom of the screen, where the line/column numbers are displayed, not about the status window.
Thanks,

I'm sorry. I didn't read your mail carefully enough :(. I thought we are talking about the status window. I like the short(one second) display of status messages in the status bar and I don't want to remove it. Anyway, I agree that the file saved message isn't that useful at this point. Maybe all file action related messages could be skipped. So, there are three possible solutions: a) just skip the file saved message in the status bar (not in the status window) b) skip all file action related messages in the status bar (not in the status window) c) add a preference to suppress all status messages in the status bar (also messages about find results and similars)
I would prefer solution a or b.

When I save a file, that status bar "File ... saved" message appears and doesn't go away until I hit an arrow key. I'm not seeing a one second delay anywhere.

Just my 2 cents, but for consistency and also for avoiding too much redundancy, I like (b).

I tried it and I saw you need to wait for a delay _and_ hit a key or move the text cursor. I think this could be better if you can wait _or_ hit a key to suppress the message.

I also think a preference is welcome. Let me explain myself. Sometimes I work with several files and I need to make some minor changes like changing the charset of the file. In this case I'd like not to get a confirmation message as I need to see the charset of each file.
Sometimes I also need to make changes on a config file for example, and in this case I like to get the saving confirmation message.
My 2 cents.

Jean-Phillipe, are you talking about the status *bar* or the status *window*?
Seems to me that since Geany has a status window, it makes sense to always get useful messages in that status window, and use the status bar only for what it already displays by default (line, column, characters selected, encoding, and so on).
However, since users can toggle visibility of the message window, maybe have the status bar display extra messages only when the message window is not visible?
BTW, I notice that the status bar says "MOD" when the file has modified. This is in addition to the name in the tab being colored red, and the asterisk appearing in Geany's title bar. Anyway, a small bug/inconsistency: although the name also appears in red in the Open Files tab in the sidebar, it turns black when it's the one that's selected. I think it should stay red, like the text in the tab.

I'm talking about the status bar, where you can find informations about the charset, current line etc.

I agree, this could be a nice solution. Maybe with a preference with 3 choices : - Always see the messages in status bar - See the messages in status bar only when the message window is not displayed - Never see the messages in status bar
BTW, I notice that the status bar says "MOD" when the file has modified. This is in addition to the name in the tab being colored red, and the asterisk appearing in Geany's title bar. Incidentally, until today, I'd never noticed that "MOD" before, or what it meant. Previously, I'd looked down there and seen "INS MOD" and thought, "yeah, I know I'm in in 'Insert Mode' ". If you think having that "MOD" in the status bar is useful (is it?), you might consider moving it (maybe to the far right) so it's not directly after "INS" or "OVR".

Clicking inside the editor widget does the same and therefore I don't really see the problem of this topic at all.

The colour changes because the file item in the open files list gets active and in most GTK themes the foreground colour for an active item is black. Is this really a problem? You still can see that the file is modified at the red tab label colour, the asterisk in the title bar and by the MOD keyword in the status bar. I just had a short look and maybe I overlooked something but it seems the colour for an active item can only be changed by using a gtkrc file. At least I didn't find any property to change it. But it might be that I missed something.

Isn't there enough space between INS and MOD to not interpret it as one word?

No, it's not a problem. It's a bit inconsistent though, and I figured since it was partially related to what was being discussed, I'd point it out.

There is enough space. However, new users (well, english-speaking ones I suppose) will look at it and,
* since both symbols are capitalized, and * since they are adjacent (even though there's space between them),
they will probably take that erroneous mental shortcut and think "insert mode" or "overwrite mode". I've been using Geany for a while and never noticed that "MOD" or what it was for.
Anyway, it's just a tiny nit that I thought I'd mention since it was related to the topic at hand.

My bad, really, I had a feeling that mail was a little confusing.

Not to sound contrary, but I really think "c" is the best solution. I don't know of any other GUI editor that overrides the line/column indicator every time it has something else to say. Also, it took me some time of using Geany before I even noticed the "search term not found" message in the status bar, and I still catch myself clicking the "find" button over and over and wondering what just happened, expecting to get a "not found" message box like I do with most other editors.
So to put it another way, I think the line/column indicators should have their very own "reserved" parking space, that failed searches should have their own prominent dialog box, and that file saved/opened/created messages are of very little interest to most users, unless of course the operation failed for some reason.

Current SVN now only logs the file opened/saved/closed messages to the status window, and doesn't show them on the status bar. These messages are evident from visible changes in the interface anyway.
