I am using Kubuntu 11.10 and have decided to use Geany as IDE for Python programming after a thorought search of available software for this purpose.
When I run my programs, all outputs show just a blank shell screen. Cannot see my results.

Could you add here your source code? I was writing simple python proggrams and had normal output on console :)
Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
Very simple code. Maybe there is an option I need to configure:
#!/usr/bin/env python print "Hello World!"
When I run it in Geany I get an empty shell (command language type in linux) with just a $ prompt.

Hi Ricardo,
It is good that you posted the OS but also post the version of Geany you are using.
There shouldn't be anything you need to do.
Look at the build commands dialog (build->set build commands) and see if the first execute command is set to: python "%f"
That should be the default, if not you've (accidently) changed something or it hasn't ben installed right.
Cheers Lex

Geany version 0.20
Please take note of image sent with this mail. When I run the code I get a bash shell, not a terminal like yours. Look at the top. I must be missing something in the configuration. The Build command is ok.
Thank you very much for your time.

Whilst there should be no reason 0.20 shouldn't work for you it is incredibly easy to install geany .21 on Ubuntu .
Once the source is downloaded cd to the directory you extracted geany ./configure make sudo make install
Try and this may resolve. Sayth

Can you confirm that /usr/bin/env python actually gives you python? e.g. just type this into a terminal and tell us what output you get:
/usr/bin/env python
On Fedora 16, I get the python shell. If you get an error, it's probably because your computer doesn't have python set up correctly, or at least /usr/bin/env doesn't know about it.

Or maybe that it maps to Python 3, for which the above snippet isn't valid (print isn't a keyword anymore but a function -- e.g. needs parenthesis around the argument(s)).

I think it'd at least print a SyntaxError on the console or something, wouldn't it?

Yes, I reckon so, which is why I suspect something's up with /usr/bin/env (like, maybe it isn't there!)
No error on the console.
Thanks.

What terminal command are you using? Check the preference in the Preferences dialog, Tools tab. Try (if not already set) "xterm" or KDE's konsole or so.
And while script is running from within Geany, check whether there is a file called 'geany_run_script.sh' in the same directory as your Python script. If so, that's good. Try to execute it from another shell and see what happens. Ideally, it should execute your Python script and then delete itself.

Yes, geany_run_script.sh exists. I will try your suggestions. Thanks.

Thank you all very much. My problem is solved! I changed the Preferences Tools tab to xterm from the original default x-terminal-emulator...
I am very impressed on the support I received from this community.
Thanks again.
