It works as I expect in gedit, i.e. copy, close and paste in firefox.
No idea then. Obviously, gedit does something different. In Geany, copying text is done by Scintilla, at least within the editor widget. Could you test what happens when you copy some text from a standard GTK widdget, like the Search text field in the toolbar or the Scribble?
