You can tell Geany to open files with a specified encoding in different ways: - force opening all files using a specific encoding (Preferences->Files) - add a hint at the beginning of mis-detected files to let Geany know how it should handle these files (http://geany.org/manual/#in-file-encoding-specification) - just save your files in UTF-8...
find it a bit misleading to see the encoding display at the bottom when the text gets garbled when the text is actually in that encoding (and decoded wrongly).
Not sure what you mean. Could you describe in more detail and/or with a screenshot?
