Hello all,
i want to share one my ide about geany interface layout and if somebody be interests about it.
"Append toolbar to menu" is really nice option but i think that my idea can provide additional minimalism, the idea is simple, the toolbar can be moved in right of sidebar in top of the editor sheet in the same level as the tabs of the sidebar and adding one more combobox for current open files (this will recover tabs).

I'm not sure what you gain by removing the document tabs altogether.
I for one always want to know what I have open and having the tabs makes it visible without having to look in a hidden list.
But I also want the maximum vertical space so I have put the tabs to the left, modern widescreen displays have plenty of horizontal space so thats no problem.
For me its a feature that adds to the code without any added benefit so I'm not for it but I'm not heavily against it either.

Similar here. In detail: I think, Geany mainly targets at developers and I think developers usually don't develop on netbooks or other devices with especially small screens. At least I develop code at home at my 22" widescreen and at work at 17" dual screens. These are still too small but that's another story :).
Back to the topic,Adrian, you are right that currently, Geany is only of limited use on really small screens. Your proposal to move the toolbar next to the sidebar to get more vertical space sounds ok. Of course, it need to be optional as the others said. I'll try to work on this soon.
About the document list in the toolbar: as Thomas said, this is implemented in a similar way as part of the Addons plugins. The relevant part is called 'Document List' and adds an icon to the toolbar which shows a list of opened documents when clicked. It does not show the currently active document's filename. Though this could be added easily to the plugin.

I think that's a premature assumption. Surely it has advantages to work with bigger screens, but that a) doesn't apply to programming only and b) doesn't necessarily mean programmers only use bigger screens. I, for one, develop on a 13.3" notebook because I prefer mobility over big screens and I highly appreciate any added vertical space.
I think the proposal adds very little though. It doesn't even add vertical space for the editor window. I couldn't use it as well, since my toolbar is on the left of the menubar.
But I would find it awesome if the space the messages windows at the bottom use could be used more effecively, although I have no ideas as to how yet :)
Best regards.

Ok, probably my assumption wasn't correct in all cases, at least for my very personal usage of Geany, haha.
Anyway, as I said, Adrian's suggestion is good and if I have time for it, I'll work on it except anyone will be faster than me.

I actually like the idea, but would suggest some small improvements to it: It always should be possible for the user to decide if he enables or disables features. So disabling of the document tabs should be optional - as it currently is in Geany, see the Interface-tab in the pref-dialog.
I'd consider the dropdown-menu in the toolbar as an additional feature which should be optional too (It actually already is, regarding that the toolbar is configurable). Thus, one can disable the document tabs if he wants, and enable the dropdown-menu if he wants. The result would be your suggestion. But if I want to have both, that also would be possible as well as if one would like to stay just with the document tabs.
For the idea with the sidebar taking more vertical space: We should think of users with small screen widths and many icons in the toolbar. They maybe wouldn't be visible all at a time. Well, the toolbar is configurable and anytime should be. So the sidebar layout should be configurable for the user too, either in the pref-dialog or as a hidden pref.

Hey, it looks ok, but this is actually already implemented in the addons plugins (see http://plugins.geany.org/), except it doesn't show the current doc's name.
Best regards.

Well, I think this is something could be changed without too much effort.

Personal I like the waydoing it via notebook tabs as e.g. I use the X (close) function quiet often. However, your idea is not bad at all. So maybe without thinking too much its something can be switch on user's behalf via an option. However, I guess I will not activate it ;)
