[ANN] Geany 1.37 is out!

We are happy to announce a new release of Geany! For a comprehensive list of changes please see: https://www.geany.org/documentation/releasenotes/ Some highlights: * Save main and project configuration whenever documents are opened/closed to reduce accidental loss of current session in the event of a crash (can be disabled). * Fix a possible crash when quitting (Hodong & Guido Falsi). * Show OS info in debug messages which can and should be included in bug reports to ease support and debugging. * Update Scintilla to version 3.21.1. * Add BibTeX (Mirco Schoenfeld) and Smalltalk (Snowflake the Pony). * Update FreeBasic, JavaScript (dmitryunruh), Lua (Filip Szymański) and Python filetypes. * Support programming ligatures (like Fira Code font) on Windows. * New translations: ie * Updated translations: da, de, el, es, fr, id, it, ja, lv, nl, pl, pt, ru, sk, sv, zh_CN This is the last release supporting GTK+2 and Windows i686 binary builds. Starting with the next release, Geany will require GTK3, a C++17 compiler (like GCC 7.3 or Clang 4.0) and Windows binary builds will only be provided for the x86_64 architecture. We want to thank all developers, translators and everyone who contributed to this release with patches, feedback, bug reports and so on. Thank you! String freeze for Geany-Plugins 1.37

Hi translators, developers and friends of Geany! As Geany is getting a new major release, the Geany-Plugins are getting too -- 1.37 will be released soon. (I'm so happy to write this after more than a year … ;)) In preparation I have updated the po-files for Geany-Plugins at github and asking you whether you could update translations, review them or maybe add new languages. As on Geany core, I'd be very happy if you could send a patch, a pull request or single file with translation to either the geany-i18n mailing list or direct to me within the next two weeks so we can include it to the next release. Deadline will be also 2020-10-24 24:00h CEST. Let's make it the most complete translated release ever done for the plugins! In preparation (and as always) I've just updated po-files for Geany core project inside github repositories and asking you whether you could update translations, review them or maybe add new languages. I'd be very happy if you could send a patch, a pull request or single file with translation to either the geany-i18n mailing list or direct to me within the next two weeks so we can include it to the next release. Deadline will be 2020-10-24 24:00h CET. This gives us about two weeks time to improve translations \o/ To get most recent files you could just clone the repositories from Geany: https://github.com/geany/geany This can be done e.g. with git clone https://github.com/geany/geany.git You can find daily updated po files at https://www.geany.org/contribute/translation/statistics/ too, which includes some statistics. Introduction & Geany Custom Config File Addition

Dear List, first, I would like to introduce myself: I am an IT teacher and long time IT consultant from Germany who has been using geany as an IDE for Java and Markdown on (X)Ubuntu for some time. My experience with respect to geany developing is mostly in file formats (plus some C++ knowledge - coming from Java, Python, and plain C). So, I think I'll be more active on the lexer (-> Scintilla) side than on the geany GUI side. Now, I created a custom config file that I'd like to share for the RDF Turtle description language (https://www.w3.org/TR/turtle/), which is being used in the context of the Semantic Web. The config is based on the Scintilla Python lexer which does most things correctly. I added custom compile and link commands for syntax check and creating a GraphViz input employing two external packages (Can anybody bring light into how the error regex is supposed to work?). I'm including this filetype.RDF-Turtle.conf for someone to put it on the geany wiki (I would be willing to do so if I knew how). I called it RDF-Turtle in order not to create confusion with the Turtle beginner's programming language. The attachment rdf-turtle-example.ttf is an example file to show the kind of syntax Turtle uses. (It does not make any practical sense in terms of its contents but it shows the relevant Turtle features.) I also added some Turtle support to snippets.conf see attached snippets.RDF-Turtle.conf. There is a variant (with respect to syntax highlighting and editing) of RDF Turtle that is called N-Triples (https://www.w3.org/TR/n-triples/) which uses another mimetype so IMHO needs an other filetypes.RDF-NTriples.conf which I also include. Patching Scintilla code

Hi dev-list, I have a question regarding the Scintilla code that is in the Geany repo. Is this raw code straight from Scintilla, or is it patched by Geany devs? I ask because I'd like to submit a patch that involves the Scintilla code and would like to know if I can do that here or if I should contact the Scintilla devs. Thanks For the curious, the issue is trackpad scroll speed. I find that vertical scrolling does way too many lines at a time, making it hard to navigate a file. I've got it to my liking now, but I think others might be interested.

Colour scheme woes

I'm trying to create a new Geany colour scheme, with only partial success. I'm calling it Slick; I've created a slick.conf file, copied from the default.conf, and made some changes. Some of them work, and some are ignored. In particular, I want to change the colour of function names, so have this: [named_styles] ... function=#0F0;#00F;true;true ... (I set those colours so that it will be very obvious when it works!) After copying the file to the relevant place and changing the scheme to Slick, function names remain obstinately black. The documentation doesn't say (anywhere I can see) in which order the multiple .conf files are processed, or which overrides what. Grateful for your suggestions.

Which path should I take regarding (System)Verilog tag parser?

How to develop an opensource project? Easy! 1) Hack the project yourself. 2) Find out that someone did it before you. ... 4) Curse yourself you didn't do point 2 before point 1 =)))) So I've learned, that the copy of ctags (at least regarding the verilog parser) is an old snapshot of what has been developed into https://github.com/universal-ctags/ctags/blob/master/parsers/verilog.c The parser there has been rewritten to properly support both SystemVerilog and classic Verilog in separate and to do hierarchical tagging. So now I have a question to answer for myself, should I (with prospects for future merge into mainstream geany): 1) Try to backport that parser into geany. 2) Keep my simplified rewritten version, that works and is a descendant of the classic ctags verilog.c parser. 3) Wait until someone merges current ctags into geany, thus bringing the desired (System)Verilog update together with many other. Good day! My name is Ivan Zelinskiy. Who am I? First of all I am a practicing FPGA developer writing my code in Verilog and SystemVerilog. I also know C/C++. Secondary I am a geany user, as it's my favorite editor in Linux - the OS (of choice!) of my workstation. As a result of the former two statements, I support my own branch of patched geany, gradually fixing issues, "paper-cuts", extending language support beyond the mainstream features. It was a steady gradual process, the first commit of my branch dates back to 2015. It all started with fixing "localparam" keyword, that would not highlight properly in /data/filedefs/filetypes.verilog. It all ended in rewriting a good part of /ctags/parsers/verilog.c to fix tag generation to include some SystemVerilog features and implement a better support for classical Verilog constructs, that would otherwise often produce "haywire" results while being parsed. The complete list of changes is to be created =). My branch of geany is published on github: https://github.com/ivzeivze/geany It's a diff-patched geany/master, that is back-merged to my local historical branch, kept out of public sight (it's messy! =)) I am currently testing the changes, introduced by exporting, by means of everyday use. But it seems pretty stable. I would be glad to see my work merged back into mainstream geany. Yet likely some clean up should be done before issuing a pull request.
