For a more complete translation experience for the users i suggest making this string translatable:
Geany is a small and lightweight Integrated Development Environment. It was developed to provide a small and fast IDE. Another goal was to be as independent as possible from a KDE or GNOME - Geany only requires the GTK3 runtime libraries.
Can be seen in gnome-software.
I think other software use a appdata.xml file with those strings. Might have something to do with appstream but i dont know the details.
Thats not in Geany, the Geany README says GTK not GTK3 so its likely something that the packagers created.
Ok i dont know what the best way to do it is. Maybe add the strings translations in the po files is best so its the same place. Its nicer when things are translated rather when partly translated. Like the stuff the users seens at first like when finding and installation.
I'm not a po-spurt, but I don't think you can just add strings to it that don't exist somewhere. @frlan ?
And anyway I don't think we should add something we don't create, like I said Geany is GTK (ie 2 and 3), but that particular distro message says GTK3 only, plus, although most of the words match the README, there are other differences.
Ok i dont know what the best way to do it is.
Report a bug with the package maintainer of whatever repository your gnome-software application is using (likely your distro package manager). Since the string doesn't come from Geany, there's nothing we can do to change it.
Cant you make a appdata.xml file with the strings? Seems like thats what other software do and then add those strings in the po files.
Well, Geany could provide an `appdata.xml` but it would be very bland, it could have no distro specific information in it, like "GTK3" in the example you gave. So distros may not use it anyway.
And it would have to be integrated with the internationalisation system properly (`appdata.xml.in` maybe?).
If somebody made a pull request that did that, we can query our packagers to see if they think its worth it.
I dont know the details or what is best i just see it from a users perspective.
The user wants to use the software so the user searches for it with the built-in software like gnome-software and it would be nice that the user could have it all in the language they use for a more complete translated experience.
I just suggest it and leave it up to other to do it or not.

For appdata.xml, see: https://sourceforge.net/p/geany/feature-requests/739/ https://github.com/geany/geany/pull/1142 https://github.com/geany/geany/pull/2014

I agree, but we can't possibly go around providing translations for every possible source of software which mentions or offers Geany.

That's not very effective for a volunteer open source project 😃
So lets say i want to translate that string mentionen in the first text where do i do that?
@scootergrisen it depends which distribution you use. There should be a bug tracker for packages in each distro where you can submit patches (ex. Launchpad for Ubuntu I think).
Alternatively you could work to get #1142 merged, and have it adopted in distro packages (they probably would like to use it). One thing I'm just noticing that's a little worrying from @b4n's comment in #1142 is:
Meh, indeed apparently it's not possible to translate a built file. Bummer.
So it might not even be possible at all ☹️
I thought appdata had been addressed before but couldn't find it, @codebrainz googles better than me :)
I created a separate ticket (#2729) regarding the appdata discussion.
As for translating files other than source code files, [po4a](https://github.com/mquinson/po4a) might be helpful in resolving some issues? I'm not sure.
