Sure, if ever, it won't be visible by default.
But as long as there is no suitable icon, it's not worth talking about
it.

Adding it to the View menu seems to me to be the same as adding toolbar
items, at least partly. At some point it also feels bloated.
But we could add a submenu to the View menu and put there editor
related view options, like:

View->Editor->Show Whitespace
View->Editor->Show indentation guides
View->Editor->Show Line numbers
View->Editor->Show Markers Margin
