Not sure why you want to do that.  Do you mean terminal as in xterm, vt100
and so on?

Try  man tabs  Nominally a posix standard command.  Implementation varies.

If you just want to be able to page through a file and have it look like it
does in Geany, you can set tab spacing in less.  E.g. less -x4 file.txt
would expand tabs to 4 spaces each.
