Ctrl-Q works fine here(Xfce with xfwm4 as window manager) when Geany is
in fullscreen.

View->Fullscreen

Most probably. Geany won't switch to fullscreen by itself :).

Indeed. But Ctrl-Q is a quite common default and Alt-F4 should work on
most systems as well.
