Did you try:

PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig pkg-config --modversion geany
?
If that doesn't work, check whether /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/geany.pc
exists.

Sorry, I assumed you meant the svn version of geanygdb :).
