i doubt that it's geany problem, from time to time i have same problem
with "smplayer" and some other app(now i don't remember with witch one).
and between your system and mine there is nothing common:
you use ubuntu, i archlinux
your desktop environment is gnome, mine LXDE
you have problem with geany i with other app... only common thing
between this is GTK, imho it's GTK problem.
