First question, by Ctrl-L do you actually mean `<ctrl>-<shift>-l` ?

Also are the l and g keys in the same place on the German keyboard as they are on the English keyboard?  If not just try undefining the keysequence and re-defining it with your keyboard layout (see #1386 and linked GTK issues for background).
