That conclusion sounds right and matches the last commands of the strace where the kill() signal
is sent.

Re. "bleeding edge VTW": I'd guess that there are several thousand openSUSE:Tumbleweed users, and maybe 20% thereof (?) may use Geany, so someone should also have this problem.
Maybe they don't see it anymore because systemd is usually hiding the coredumps, but I've
changed my /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern to get good'ol "core" files.

Can I provide anything else to narrow down something for your to reproduce?
