@gsantner definitely. Testing, reviewing and following up on Issues/PRs is a great start. Generally such meta stuff is discussed on the Geany developers mailing list.

@elextr distros would be free to change the appdata file/images however they like as they do for other stuff, similar to how Mint did previously by having their default icon theme provide overrides for those non-standard icons you mentioned.
