@elextr indeed, you got me there :-)

Why would a polished user experience be only relevant for a _commercial_ software product? There are many examples where open source software is more polished than commercial counterparts, unfortunately desktop software is often not in this camp (yet?).

> Richard Stallman the father of open source development

Don't let him hear that ;-) being the father of the "Free Software" movement.

He is (rightfully) concerned about openness. His point is that without the source code, software is worthless (to him). My point is that to the average user, without (easily) working binaries, software is useless (to them). Truth be told, this may be less of a concern for an IDE which is focusing on developers as the target group.

Personally I am convinced that a polished end user experience requires that there is no split between the people who develop (and understand the inner working of) software and the people who build the software and try to distribute it to end users. There are even extreme cases where upstreams have _forbidden_ distributions to change (and thus, subtly break) their software due to some distribution policies.

In general, though, this notion of "only commercial software has to be a polished end user experience" guarantees that Linux will remain a tiny niche on the desktop. Sorry if this was half-OT. That being said, I respect that projects are driven by volunteers and volunteers do what volunteers do. That's OK for me, as I am a volunteer myself.
