The space only works if `HISTCONTROL` is set to `ignorespace`.  Instead of setting that you could set `ignoredup` or `erasedup`, see [here](http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/html_node/Bash-Variables.html#index-HISTCONTROL)
