It didn't occur to me to look in Github, so I'll be sure to do that first next time.

The https://download.geany.org/snapshots/geany-1.36_osx.dmg snapshot referred to in theĀ https://github.com/geany/geany/issues/2344 thread seems to fix the Catalina rendering issue, so thank-you very much for pointing me in the right direction.

Issues with Catalina are a know issue. And are e.g. discussed here:

Also there are snapshots available that should address at least a few
known issues.
