I struggle with accidently hitting the 'code folding' all the time.
Can't say I "struggle" with it, but I do occasionally fold things when trying to put the cursor at the start of the line.
A blank unclickable user settable margin may do the trick. https://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html#Margins
Think it is more of an issue with being able to click the beginning of the line. I have a sidebar and it offers to move it instead of allowing to click start of line.
I turned off the code folding and still having trouble. So if it was me I'd like a clickable gutter for beginning of the line instead of just blank.

@marcDouglas the sidebar handle should be on the left of the margins and the folding on the right, it should be hard to hit one when you meant the other?
Note that the margins are all part of the Scintilla widget which is a separate project from Geany (see the link I posted above) so we can only do what it provides. It might be possible to make clicking the margin move the cursor to the start of the line, but thats extra work and "somebody" has to do it.
on mine it is nearly impossible to click the beginning of the line. the side bar mover icon covers half or more of the beginning line area.
it does seem like it would be better to fix from scintilla perhaps. but I can also imagine fixing the side bar proximity to page itself.

Thats weird, please supply version of Geany, OS, version of Glib and GTK and a screen image.
It probably depends heavily on the font.

Good point, please also supply font in use.

small video of how the <--> bar shows up and keeps me from click the beginning of the line.

@marcDouglas github doesn't do attachments by email, you need to use the web interface.
It seems like there is less click area with Oxygen Mono, but you can still click on the first letter to get the cursor before it, so it's not super difficult here, though I'm using a mouse rather than a trackpad and have good mouse control, which isn't necessarily true for everyone.
gif was too big, so zipped the webm.

I am not able to find any font that makes a difference.
So you have line numbers and markers margins and fold margins off, would have been worth mentioning since thats not the default. The sidebar handle/start of line isn't a problem by default since the default is to have the margins on and that separates the handle from the line. Having them off gives little room for the handle cursor to fit. How wide the sidebar handle is, and how its presented is a GTK theme thing, you could look at tailoring the theme, its probably not something Geany needs to address.
But your OP (and what I originally replied to) is about folding, and that is still annoying.
Nobody mentioned that not having default setup and using the options to turn things off would break things.
Marker margins fixes that problem. Now it is hard to click the markers tho... which is probably why I turned them off not realizing I just moved the problem.
