Not Mac specific, the problem is that the default GTK theme makes the size of window pane handles extremely small, especially on high resolution screens. It would be a good exercise for your mentees to Google which GTK CSS setting controls that and set it in Geany.css.
The thing is that at least on macOS, once you start nearing the edge of the window with the mouse cursor, it becomes a window-resize cursor and resizes the whole editor window and you cannot grab the sidebar edge (it would have to be extremely wide, say 6px to be able to grab it).
I have a WIP patch I'll post maybe later today that at least allows users to get out of this situation without having to edit the Geany config file.
