I seem to understand. The problem is NumLock. If I turn off numlock, then vim mode works. If I enable NumLock, then vim mode doesn't work. Obviously this is a bug. We'll have to put up with it until this problem is fixed.
It would be nice to write about this problem in the README so that other users are aware of its solution.
