I just tried both an "old" (mid-2024) Geany build, and a fresh one, and both worked on a few basic ssh -X tests. I tried with 2 machines, one olde Debian Buster, and a Debian Bookworm, and it worked with either end as the client or server.
As @eht16 I doubt this is specific to Geany (esp. if it's regarding the toolbar entry that should be mostly GTK itself), and probably specific to your setup somehow.
